Volkswagen announced the redesign of the Golf overseas late last year, and while it is not yet known if the regular model will be released in the U.S., it is confirmed that enthusiast versions like the Golf GTI and Golf R will be available in the U.S.

The Golf GTI has already been revealed, and now spy shots and video of the Golf R prototype have been released.

The new Golf is a heavy update of its predecessor rather than a true redesign. As a result, the new Golf R will follow the same performance path as its predecessor, which was discontinued at the end of 2019.

Power will come from a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo, and peak output this time around is expected to hover around 328 hp, a healthy jump up from the previous generation's 292 hp. Drive will be on all four wheels, most likely via a standard dual-clutch transmission.

The new Golf GTI has increased power. While U.S. figures have not been disclosed, the 2.0-liter turbo four is expected to peak at 242 hp, matching the output of the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid sold overseas; a Golf R "Plus" model with nearly 400 hp could eventually make an appearance.

But back to this Golf R. Thanks to the lack of camouflage gear, we can see new front and rear fascia designs. Also clearly visible are the Golf R's signature quad exhausts.

All models in the eighth-generation Golf family feature a high-tech cabin with a 10.25-inch digital meter cluster and 8.25-inch infotainment screen, Internet connectivity, and semi-autonomous driver assistance features. Expect the Golf R to receive a few additional touches in the cabin, including a model-specific menu of infotainment systems, bucket seats up front, and "R" badging.

The Golf R is expected to debut in the summer.

VW is working to dramatically expand its R-badged model offerings in the coming years. The T-Roc R compact crossover and Touareg R plug-in hybrid are already available overseas, and R versions of the Tiguan and Alleyton are coming soon.
