Apple CarKey for iOS 13.4 can turn your iPhone or Apple Watch into a digital key.
A future update to Apple's iOS mobile operating system may allow the company's mobile devices to function as car keys.
Apple released an early beta version of iOS 13.4, Apple's latest mobile operating system, last week, and tech website 9to5Mac noticed a reference to a feature called CarKey.
According to the system's internal files, CarKey can be used by iPhone and Apple Watch users to unlock and start keyless entry vehicles that rely on near field communication (NFC) security systems. Importantly, it does not require Face ID for authentication. It also works even if the mobile device's battery runs out.
According to findings by 9to5Mac, implementation of CarKey still requires support from automakers. For example, an initial pairing process between the mobile device and the NFC reader in the car is required. Once the pairing is complete, the key can be used in the Wallet app. If pairing fails, the key can be manually added to the Wallet app by entering the PIN.
Interestingly, keys can be shared remotely. This means that the owner can provide friends and family with access to his or her car without having to meet in person to hand over the keys.
