Porsche Macan will sell both current and electric models.

Porsche announced a year ago that the next-generation Macan would be a battery EV model based on a dedicated EV platform to be jointly developed by Porsche and Audi, another Volkswagen Group brand.

The debut is expected in 2022 or 2023, which would be around the time the current Macan completes Porsche's typical seven-year life cycle. But even at that point, not everyone will be ready to switch to EVs, so Porsche will continue to sell the current Macan alongside the redesigned model for at least three years, Car and Driver reported Monday, citing senior-level sources.

The current Macan will be updated in 2019 and remains Porsche's best-selling model. Nevertheless, the sources revealed that it will be updated again when the electric version arrives so that the two share similar styling.

Sources also revealed that Porsche will not offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the current Macan. Instead, a mild hybrid may be introduced.

Despite plans to extend the life of the Macan with an internal combustion engine, Porsche remains committed to introducing more EVs. Porsche predicts that 50 percent of its sales will be EVs by as early as 2025.
