Introducing the original Mad Max special.
The black police car from the Mad Max film series is one of the most iconic cars in cinema.
Called the Pursuit Special, it is based on a 1973 Ford Falcon GT XB-series coupe sold in Australia, and became as popular as some of the human characters thanks to the original film and sequels. Mad Max: Death Road of Fury, who hasn't wept watching them get destroyed?
This same modified XB Falcon was used for the original 1979 Mad Max movie and its first sequel, Mad Max 2, released in 1981. The same car is now on display at the Orlando Auto Museum in Orlando, Florida, and is for sale, so it could be yours.
It is part of an extensive collection of movie cars and other classic cars owned by real estate mogul Michael Deser. No price has been named, but it is rumored that Deser previously rejected a $2 million offer.
According to Australian auction house Shannons, after filming of the original movie ended, producer Kennedy Miller Productions was unable to find a buyer and gave the car to company employee Murray Smith in lieu of payment. He too was unable to find a buyer until Kennedy Miller Productions asked for the car back for the filming of the first sequel.
The car was then sold to a junkyard, but in 1985 it was picked up by Bob Fasenko, restored and toured. The car then changed hands several times before going on display at the Cars of the Stars museum in the UK in the early 1990s. The museum closed in 2011 and the collection, including the Mad Max, was sold to Dezer.
