Genesis is preparing a major update to its G80 midsize sedan, as evidenced by a recently spotted camouflaged prototype.

The proportions are similar to the current G80, which is just a rebadge of the second-generation Hyundai Genesis introduced in 2015, but the main indication that this is an update rather than a complete redesign is the overall design of the side windows and especially the C-pillar.

The difference, of course, is that the G80 is a new model.

The differences, of course, are there: the face has undergone a major restyling inspired by the Essentia coupe concept unveiled by Genesis at the 2018 New York Auto Show. The triangular-shaped grille and dual-stripe flat headlights were borrowed from the concept.

Moving to the rear, you'll notice that the side mirrors have been moved to the doors, rather than at the base of the A-pillar as on the current G80. And at the rear, the trunk lid has a kambak-like design with a recurring motif of flat headlights. The final design is expected to be similar to what can be seen on the G90 flagship sedan in 2020 and the GV80 midsize SUV in 2021.

The current G80 is powered by a 311-hp 3.8-liter V6 and a 420-hp 5.0-liter V8 in regular versions, and a 365-hp twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 in the G80 Sport package The V8 engine is discontinued, and the base V6 Cylinder engine may be replaced by the 2.5-liter turbocharged inline four that debuted on the GV80, but Genesis has remained silent on the matter. Perhaps a plug-in hybrid will eventually appear as well. This was hinted at in 2017 by Genesis design chief Luc Donckerwolke.

The interior should also get a significant update. A digital instrument cluster and large infotainment screen are expected, as well as the latest electronic driver assistance systems.

Although Genesis falls short of the dynamic level of German brands in the premium segment, its cars are rated as top-of-the-line cars in recent market research thanks to the efforts of former Bentley and Lamborghini designer Donckerwolke and his team, The brand's design appears to be improving.

Pricing for the updated G80, which will be introduced later this year as a 2021 model, will likely start close to the current model's base price of $43,000. In addition, the Genesis lineup will likely include a small SUV, a large coupe, and a battery-powered powertrain.
