The Polestar 2 electric sports sedan has gone into production.

On Monday, assembly of the first customer model of the Polestar 2 electric sports sedan was completed at the Luqiao plant in China.

At this plant, Volvo and Lynk & Co. under the same Geely brand assemble their compact cars on the CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform, which is also used in the Polestar 2.

Polestar has its own plant in Chengdu, China, which is currently only used to produce the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid coupe.

Deliveries of the Polestar 2 will begin this summer in Europe, and soon after in other markets, including the United States, where it is due in 2021.

Note that the first model will be an expensive starter version priced from $63,000 with many optional extras as standard. A cheaper version will be introduced at a later date.

The Polestar 2 is aimed at the Tesla Model 3, and its performance and range are comparable to the all-wheel-drive version of Tesla's larger range, with prices starting at $48,990.

The Polestar 2's sole powertrain is an electric motor front and rear, developing a total of 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. This power is boosted by a package that includes Öhlins shock absorbers, Brembo brakes, and 20-inch forged wheels.

The range from the 78-kilowatt-hour battery powering the engine is 275 miles, but EPA figures won't be known until closer to launch.

With the Polestar 1 and Polestar 2 already in production, the Polestar 3 SUV is expected to appear around 2022. Paulstar has also hinted at a large sedan with a fastback body, having recently unveiled the Precept concept car.
