Totem Automobili's restomod, the Alfa Romeo GTA, is an electric car with a carbon fiber body.

Totem Automobili remakes the classic Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA (hence the name of Alfa's most hardcore sedan to date) into a modern car with an electric powertrain and carbon fiber body.

The Alfa Romeo Totem GTe began life as a regular Giulia GTA, debuting in 1965, and then the Totem took off. The car, first spotted by Motor 1 on Monday, is powered by a single electric motor developing 518 hp and 692 lb-ft of torque. According to Totem, 0-62 mph is 3.4 seconds.

A 50.4 kWh battery pack provides a range of 199 miles in "standard mode" (probably measured on a European test cycle). The prototype vehicle is equipped with a 6.6 kWh on-board charger, but the production vehicle will be equipped with a more powerful fast charging system.

According to Totem, the battery pack weighs 771.6 kg, but the carbon fiber body will offset some of that weight. Instead of copying the original Alfa design verbatim, Totem made a number of subtle changes: the GTe has four headlights instead of two, the C-pillar has been redesigned, and the badges on the Alfa grille lack the original stripes. Totem also created a flat floor with air vents in the rear to create downforce and redesigned the underside of the car to improve aerodynamics.

Totem used only 10% of the original chassis and installed a subframe to increase stiffness. The Alfa's suspension was also modified. Instead of the stock double wishbone front suspension, Totem installed McPherson struts and Bilstein Clubsport bi-directional adjustable coilovers. At the rear, a multi-link independent suspension is mounted on a new subframe that holds the electric motor. Totem will also offer air suspension.

The GTe is mounted on 17-inch wheels with Continental ContiSport Contact tires designed by Totem. The brakes are by Brembo.

Instead of the usual gauges, Totem uses a pair of 3.5-inch screens. Unlike the original Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA, the GTe is equipped with power windows. Air conditioning is offered as an option.

Totem originally planned to unveil the GTe at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2020, but the event was postponed due to a global coronavirus outbreak. It is currently unknown when and where it will be unveiled.
