For sale is a 1984 Porsche 962 IMSA race car.

Porsche's tremendous success in racing was due in part to its ability to repeat itself. This 1984 Porsche 962 for sale by Canepa, a company known for its Porsche restorations, is an example of this.

The 962 was a development of the Porsche 956 and was already dominating European racetracks in the mid-1980s. However, the car did not meet the requirements of IMSA, the main sanctioning organization for sports car racing in the United States.

IMSA rules required the driver's legs to be behind the front axle for greater crash protection. Porsche therefore lengthened the wheelbase, moved the pedal assembly behind the front axle, and replaced the 956 with the 962; cars destined for IMSA racing were equipped with a turbocharged 2.8-liter six with a five-speed manual transmission.

In the fall of 1983, Porsche provided the 962nd car to IMSA teams in the top GTP class. According to Canepa, the car proved so popular that about 16 cars were supplied to the teams.

The car - the 962-102 - was originally supplied to Bob Akin for the 1984 season.Akin won the IMSA Camel GT Endurance Championship in 1983 in a Porsche 935 and finished sixth twice that year. In 1985, his best results were in the Daytona 24 race. Best results in 1985 were in the Daytona 24 Hour race and fourth place in the Riverside 600 km race; midway through the season, car 962-102 went off the track due to an accident.

The car was transferred to Penske Racing, but never made a start with that legendary team. Instead, it was repainted from Coca-Cola livery to that of Penske's current sponsor Miller Brewing and used as a show car; 962 was owned by team owner Roger Penske until 2005, when it was sold to Jim Torres[.

.

Torres began a restoration but was unable to complete it. Torres sold the restored car to Gunner Racing, who debuted it at the 2009 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The car competed in historic races for the next decade, and was maintained by Canepa for about half of that time

.

The 962 car remained competitive long after the chassis was taken out of production, winning races until the mid-1990s. One of these cars was converted into a road car.

This car may not have been very successful in racing, but it was one of the most successful models, and the Coca-Cola paint job is iconic. Now it can be yours. Canepa has not named a price, but the usual rules apply.
