2024 Porsche Macan EV goes public, starting price $80,450

Porsche finally revealed its new electric Macan on Thursday.

The battery-powered compact crossover is already taking orders in the U.S., with deliveries expected to begin later this year; it will be introduced as a 2024 model, and will be available in two grades: the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo.

Initially, the Macan 4 and Macan Turbo will be available in two grades, starting at $80,450 and $106,950, respectively. Both include a $1,650 destination charge.

Porsche will also offer the current gasoline-powered Macan for the 2024 model year and may continue to offer it in future model years before eventually discontinuing it.

The two Macan generations are completely unrelated, which may confuse some, as Porsche has not given its electric Macan a unique name. The vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group's new PPE modular EV platform, which Porsche developed in partnership with Audi. The first Audi to use this platform will be the soon-to-be-released Q6 E-Tron compact crossover.

In the case of the Macan, this platform features a 100 kwh battery (95 kwh available) and an electric motor that drives each axle. The torque distribution, which can be modified according to the selected driving mode, is handled by a new traction system called ePTM (electronic Porsche traction management). According to Porsche, this system is five times faster than conventional all-wheel-drive torque distribution systems, reacting in just 10 milliseconds. Higher grades, such as the Macan Turbo, also feature an electronically controlled rear differential lock.

To further aid handling, an air suspension with adaptive dampers is standard on all models. These dampers are the same dual-valve design that debuted on Porsche's redesigned 2024 Panamera, and can be adjusted for both rebound and compression, providing a wider spread between comfort and performance. Rear-wheel steering is also an option.

The Macan 4 has a maximum output of 402 hp and the Macan Turbo has a maximum output of 630 hp; both are temporary peak values due to the overboost feature. Owners of the Macan 4 can expect 0-60 mph acceleration of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 136 mph, while owners of the Macan Turbo can expect 3.1 seconds and 161 mph.

The vehicle will be available for sale in the US and Canada.

To increase range, Porsche has worked to reduce drag to nearly sports car levels. Thanks in part to active aerodynamic elements such as the rear spoiler, front air intake flaps, and flexible covers that form part of the enclosed underbody, the vehicle has a relatively low drag coefficient of 0.25. The suspension also lowers the vehicle's height at high speeds, further increasing efficiency.

The all-electric Macan is equipped with an 800-volt electrical system capable of charging up to 270 kw. In addition, the Macan can receive so-called bank charging when only 400-volt charging stations are available. This process splits the 800-volt battery into two 400-volt segments, allowing parallel charging that speeds up the charging process. According to Porsche, a 10-80% charge can be achieved in just 21 minutes.

The electric Macan is 188.4 inches long, several inches longer than the gasoline-powered Macan. More importantly, the wheelbase has been increased by 3.4 inches, giving it more cabin space. Rear storage is 46.5 cubic feet with the rear seats folded flat, and the front trunk adds another 2.9 cubic feet.

The dash offers a third screen (10.9 inches) for the passenger in addition to the standard screens for the instrument cluster (12.6 inches) and infotainment system (10.9 inches) for navigation and media controls. A light bar extending along the dashboard to the doors can indicate charging status or provide a welcome sequence when entering the vehicle. It also works in conjunction with several electronic driver assistance features to provide visual cues for warnings. Porsche also offers a heads-up display with augmented reality (AR) functionality, which clearly shows when and where to operate the controls when using navigation.

Production takes place at Porsche's plant in Leipzig, Germany.
