2024 Aston Martin DB12 Volante Spy Shots and Video
In July, Aston Martin announced the 2024 DB12 as the successor to the DB11 Grand Tourer, and now a prototype of the car's convertible body style (Volante in Aston Martin terminology) has been spotted.
Aston Martin has no surprises in store for this design. The roof is an automatic folding soft top, probably the same design used on the DB11 Volante.
This means that the roof is an eight-layer structure lined with sound-absorbing and insulating materials to prevent noise and weather effects, and requires only 16 seconds to raise and lower.
Since the DB12 represents a significant update to the DB11 rather than a true redesign, sticking with the old roof is not a surprise, but the changes made to the car are significant enough to justify the new name.
Under the hood is the same Mercedes-Benz AMG V-8 engine as the DB12. Mated to a rear-mounted eight-speed automatic transmission, drive is transmitted to the rear wheels via an electronically controlled limited slip differential.
Aston Martin has not ruled out a return of the V-12 engine, but it may be reserved for a more radical DB12 or another model such as the planned DBS successor.
There are also rumors that hybrid technology will be added to the DB12 lineup.
Inside the cabin, look for the same high-tech dash as the coupe, namely the instrument cluster and digital screen for the infotainment system, and a wealth of physical controls for frequently used functions. The infotainment system is Aston Martin's own design, with full support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless updates.
The DB12 Volante is scheduled to debut late this year or early next year.
This is not the only new Aston Martin. Aston Martin is also preparing a new Vantage sports car for launch later this year, which should have a convertible option.
