Porsche is working on an update to the current 992-generation 911 series, and the latest prototype spotted is for the 911 Carrera Cabriolet.

Called the 992.2 generation internally, the updated range should get mild styling tweaks, a revised dash, and hybrid options for some models.

Carrera Cabriolet prototypes show new front intakes with vertical shutters, new headlight internals, and revised taillight design.

The rear is much more heavily camouflaged than the front. However, it can be seen that the exhaust tips are mounted closer to the center of the rear mask than on the current Carrera. This confirms rumors that a new engine may be introduced with this update, specifically a larger, naturally aspirated unit like the 4.0-liter flat-six found in Porsche's 718 series, with maximum output starting at 394 hp. The current Carrera is equipped with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six, with maximum output starting at 379 hp.

There is some truth to this rumor. Porsche's chief engineer for the 911, Frank-Steffen Walliser, said in an interview in 2020 that new emission regulations scheduled for Europe around mid-decade will spur a resurgence of larger engines rather than downsized units. The new regulations appear to be aimed at bringing actual fuel economy figures in line with those tested in laboratories.

As noted above, the update will bring hybrid technology to the 911, and we know that the 911 Turbo will have a hybrid option, possibly on the top-of-the-line Turbo S.

The new engine will also be available in a new, more powerful version of the 911 Turbo.

Carrera prototypes have also been tested with hybrid power. The Carrera's hybrid option will likely be limited to the range-topping Carrera GTS grade.

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said that in 2022, the 911's hybrid setup will follow the system of the former 919 Hybrid LMP1 racing car and not a plug-in hybrid system like the hypercar 918 Spyder. In other words, there is no plug, and the electric motor-generator is purely used to support the internal combustion engine and to recover energy during braking.

According to the photographer, the interior of this prototype is also covered, suggesting that perhaps some changes will be made to the dashboard. The infotainment system will likely be updated, and the current dual-clutch automatic gear lever, which looks like an electric shaver, may be redesigned.

The first member of the updated 992-generation 911 series should appear in late 2023 or early the following year.
