GM's Full-Size SUV First in 400,000-Mile Road Network Expansion by Super Cruise

GM's signature driver assistance feature, Super Cruise, is a limited automated driving system for highways, but its use is about to be significantly expanded.

In August, GM announced plans to roll out an updated version of Super Cruise that will cover 400,000 miles (double the current coverage) in the US and Canada.

2023 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade-V2023 Chevrolet Tahoe (High Country and Premier trim) 2023 Chevrolet Suburban (High Country and Premier trim) 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate

The changes will apply to vehicles with the Super Cruise feature manufactured on or after October 3. In addition, vehicles equipped with Google Maps will be able to display Super Cruise-compatible routes when selecting a route.

Super Cruise combines multiple driver assistance functions, such as adaptive cruise control and active lane control, with maps and GPS data to accurately position the vehicle within its lane for a safe and smooth ride. Even though it is a true hands-free system, the driver must constantly monitor the situation and take action when necessary. Otherwise, the system would shut down. In other words, it still ranks as Level 2 on the SAE automated driving capability scale. To rank above Level 2, the automated driving system must function in eyes-off mode.

GM plans to offer Super Cruise in 22 vehicles globally by the end of 2023, with a more advanced version, dubbed Ultra Cruise, to be rolled out the following year. Ultra Cruise has already been confirmed for the 2024 Cadillac Celestic and promises to cover about 95% of the country's roads, although it will require driver monitoring According to GM, Ultra Cruise will recognize permanent traffic control devices and will be able to follow a route through the road, which will be monitored by the driver, It will be able to follow navigation routes, obey posted speed limits, make automatic and on-demand lane changes, make left and right turns, avoid objects, and park in residential driveways.
